Please show me how to do this conversion?
« on: September 09, 2012, 02:15:23 PM »
[10] In the opening scenes of the movie Raiders of the Lost Arc, Indiana Jones and an unscrupulous guide
play catch with a gold idol.
a) Assuming the idol to be 1.5 Liters, what would this weigh in pounds?  Is playing catch feasible?
(The density of gold is 19.32 g/cm3,  1Lb = 4.54 kg)

To begin to solve this for yourself (you'll need to come exam time) can you first quote for us a relevant formula that relates density, mass and volume?

d= m/v right? Okay so do I convert the density to kg?

Now, try plugging in the values you know into the formula you have.  Keep the units, it may be helpful later.  You should be able to find out how to get what you don't know -- its just a little bit of algebra.

Okay I multiplied the 19.32 by 1.5 and got 28.98. Then I divided it by the conversion factor 4.54kg and got 6.38 is that correct?

No it is not.

Okay I multiplied the 19.32 by 1.5 and got 28.98.

This bit is correct.

the conversion factor 4.54kg and got 6.38 is that correct?

but this bit is wrong because 1lb = 0.454kg

DrCMS: gave you some important help ... keep the units when doing your math.  If you'd had, you would have noticed ... 4.54 kilos per pound?  That would be a bad thing, if you were buying and selling produce on either side of the Atlantic.
