IUPAC naming once again.
« on: June 25, 2008, 10:43:15 PM »
Hello Chemists

Please don't get upset with my posting on names. I have spent the two last full days practicing of IUPAC naming.

I am hoping that I have almost mastered it, but I just wanted to double check on one more thing.

                 OH
                 l
Triangle -CHCHCH3
             l
             CH3

In naming this name would I put the cyclopropyl first or last???
Would your say the name would be:

1-Cyclopropyl-1-methyl-2-propanol
1-Methyl-1-cyclopropyl-2-propanol (I am thinking this one!!!)

Would anyone help clarify my nightmare in IUPAC namings.

Thank you!!!

What's your longest chain?  Is it really just a propane?

Don't worry.  No one really masters IUPAC naming, but practice is always good.

Like macman said find your longest alkyl chain and determine how you will name the backbone.  Then the alcohol takes priority over the cyclopropane.
