chelates

how can you tell if ligands can be polydantates? and how do you count the max number of places on the ligands that can bind to a metal center? Do you have to draw lewis structures or is there a way to find out from the molecular formula? for example HN(CH2CH2NH2)2.  What's the easiest way to count the number of places that it can bond?
