HWE Reaction Phosphonate Carbanion Formation Mechanism
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:54:00 PM »
Hi,

Quick question, what is the mechanism for the phosphonate carbanion formation when you are preparing the reactant for an HWE reaction with an aldehyde or ketone?

Where does the ethyl group go that was on one of the oxygens?

I am thinking the bromine comes in and bromoethane forms?

Look up the Arbusov reaction.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!
