Hello to all ,
Am new to this forum.
CD's and DVD's are made up of poycarbonate plastic discs with Al on them and also certain dyes to hold data.
DVD's have two layers of polycarbonate and a metallica layer sandwiched between them.
Any opinion about how we can recycle CD's and DVD's.
CD / DVD exist a lot , but seemingly there is not much recycling happening.
Also would it viable to use HNO3 or Ethanol for mass recycling millions of cds.
It still seems a new subject
The polycarbonate obtained can be re used.

Please lets disucss further :
1.History of recycling CD process
2.Scope - Current
3.Commercial viability
4.Actual process that would be most effective to recover polycarbonate - cheap and safe.

I'm surprised it's such a problem. Can't they just be chucked into the recycling bags with all the other plastics and stuff?
Personally I'd use them as coffee coasters, or tie a short ribbon between 2 of them and then a longer one round the back and two medium ones over the top to make a very stylish, fashionable and modern en-vogue style nippless bra! I reckon Madonna would ware it well.
Type "CD Recycling" into google - there is a load of info there. (although nothing about nippless bra's! - patent office here I come John Paul Gautier! ;D)

Try Searching :
"CD Recycling" and "Nippleless Bras" in quotes , you will get similar number of results.
So both are rare. :D
, Searching in Google is obviously the first thing anyone would do.
That's why I came to this forum , expecting serious chemical discussion.
All are welcome to provide their input , more the discussion better the thought.

I tried typing what you suggested into google and there are only 3 hits - none relevant from what I could see. ??? What was it you were referring too? If you type "CD Recycling" into google like I suggested then there are loads of hits with a load of different ideas on CD recycling - were none of them good at all?
here: http://www.polymerrecycling.co.uk/largeCD.html - They pulp the paper inserts and granulate the plastic.
More home ideas here: http://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/245/1/DVD-and-CD-Recycling.html and links to recycling organisation that deal with CD/DVD recycling. They mention reclaiming he gold briefly as well.
As I said - just type "CD recycling into google - there are a lot more hits that are relevant.

No Suggestions from people.
This is still a new concept and not much exists on CD recycling.
Consider the concepts , on why is it difficult to remove the aluminum in a cheap manner from the polycarbonate.
