Title: Best alcohol to use..A-C dehydration
Post by: jrpestana on June 11, 2005, 04:09:06 PM

Greetings (my first post  :))

I am currently enrolled in Organic Chem I 5-week 5-credit course :o
and was hoping to get help with the following lab question.

What would be the best alcohol to use in an acid catalyzed dehydration to prepare 1,3-dimethylcyclopentene?

Your help is greatly appreciated. JR

It's a Dehydration of Alcohol lad experiment... I could not figure out what direction to take the question in, but could they just be asking primary, secondary or tertiary alcohol? Help is appreciated. Thanks for the reply.

I think the most suitable one is 2,5-dimethylcyclopentanol.

Remember, stereochemistry is also involved.
