Question about purification of Aspirin
« on: November 17, 2007, 12:25:28 PM »
Hi everyone

   please help me in this question : How do we purify Aspirin after we prepare it as crystal ?

If we add iron(III) Chloride to the crystal and obtain violet color , does the appearance of violet color indicate that salycilic acid is pure or not?

Dear Spiderman1441;

As I know: Not either! – If the violet is of the correct wavelength it signalises only the presence of Aspirin, - not more, not less.
But a several other compounds do similar reactions, so it is not of real evidence.

One of the usually methods for purifying is Re-cristalisation.

Good Luck!
