Protecting groups for carbohydrates
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:54:57 AM »
Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if someone could help me out.

I've tried selectively protecting the primary hydroxyl of monosaccharides with both trityl groups and TIPS groups both using imidazole.

The TIPS gave much better selectivity over the secondary hydroxyls.

Does anyone have an idea why, I would have expected the opposite since the trityl group is bulkier?
