Balancing Skeletal equations
« on: August 18, 2007, 09:24:14 AM »
I am gettin myself confused with these...
Balance the following skeletal equations, using oxidation and reduction half reactions:

IO3-(aq) + I-(aq) -----> I2(aq)

MnO4-(aq)  +  H2SO3(aq)  -----> Mn2+(aq)  +  HSO4-(aq)

any help would be grrreat...

First write the half reactions, then balance all atoms (other than H and O).  Then add H2O to balance O, and then H+ (protons) to balance H (assume acidic solution).  Next, balance the charge by adding electrons.  Once you've done this, make sure each half reaction contains the same number of electrons, then add them together.
