Buffer Questions
« on: March 09, 2011, 08:52:50 PM »
Hi. I have a few questions regarding buffers.

How much 0.2M sodium hydroxide should I use to make a 1:1 buffer with 100.0 milliliters of 0.2M ethanoic acid?
I have no idea on how to start this. Can someone give me a hint? Thanks

Edit: Is it 50.00 milliliters? Because I want to add enough sodium hydroxide to neutralize half the ethanoic acid, right?  ???

I know have to calculate the pH of the buffer solution
NaOH(aq) + CH3COOH(aq)  ::equil:: CH3COO(aq)- + H2O(l)

-log [CH3COO(aq)-] = pH?

How should I go about doing this then?
