Alkene Nomenclature question
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:02:43 PM »

Doing some online homework, got that one wrong (it doesn't provide the answer).

I put..

(Z)-1-chloro-2,3-dimethyl-2-pentene

(Z) because the first priority groups are respectively cis
1-chloro because the chlorine is on the first carbon in the 5-carbon chain
2,3-dimethyl because of the two methyl groups coming off the double bonded carbons
2-pentene because the double bond is on the second carbon..

what did I miss? :(

As well, I couldn't get this one..

I put..

3-chloro-3-methyl-1-cyclohexene

the chlorine and methyl groups are on the third carbon in the cyclohexene.. didn't know what I did wrong there.

For the first one - one of your methyl 'substituents' is part of the main chain.

For the second one - I don't believe the '1' is necessary.

I see the error for number 1, that was a stupid mistake.

But for the second one, is that the only problem with it? Just making sure I have the material down-pat; stupid errors I can fix along the way
