HELP ON DEFINITIONS
« on: September 13, 2009, 07:27:57 AM »
can someone please confirm which is correct out of the following two statements:

1.All atoms of the same element have the same relative atomic mass.

2.All atoms of the same element have the same atomic number.

i believe number 1 is correct because the relative atomic mass takes into account the average of each element's isotopes and should therefore be equal for each atom.

however number 2 is also correct in my opinion because i know the proton number does not change, but the number of neutrons.

Please help :)))

One atom weight 1, other atom weight 2. They weight 1.5 on average. None of the atoms weight 1.5.
