Please explain what is happening in the reaction. What is the role of the carboxylic acid.

Acetic acid is a solvent in this reaction. However, it must also lead to the formation of HBr.

Consider that the reaction is being performed in the presence of acetic acid.  What are ketones prone to when exposed to acid?
