Why does reactions like Birch reduction of benzene with Na/liq NH3 (giving Cyclohexadiene)occur? The aromatic stability of benzene is being sacrificed..so can you pls explain the reaction mechanism?  ???

Could you please post your results of how you figured it out? Other folks that come to this board and have the same question might be interested in seeing how you worked it out, plus I could use a refresher course on the subject myself.

Thanks!
