The Smell of Esters - Experiment

I was wondering whether the smell of esters is caused by the alcohol or the carboxylic acid? Or both?
As I really like learning by doing, does anyone have any ideas how I could investigate this aspect by an experiment?

An ester is the compound formed by the combination of both an alcohol and an acid.. So, it is the effect of the combination... You can't say if the smell is 'inherited' from the acid or the alcohol.

Please correct me if I'm wrong
