Is there any fire that is not hot or will not burn?
« on: April 18, 2008, 06:55:47 AM »
Hey all, just wondering if there is anyway you can get fire to not burn or not be hot.  Or is there anyway of making a suit of some sort that will protect you from the flame?

Some ethanol/water mixtures burn alot cooler than the pure hydrocarbon.  I still wouldn't want to be compleatly engulfed in the flames though.   Type 'cool flame'  into google and read around.

No.  No.  Yes.

No, that one never got shown this side of the lake.

I truly didn't (and still don't) know where this question was headed.  I half expected to be led to a chemical proof of the Biblical burning bush.

I see where your coming from...    ::)

You can actually hold the burning Ethanol/water flames in your hand IIRC.

I won't try to explain then. You had to be there really.

My old chemistry books say that thiophosphoryl fluoride PSF3 burns spontaneously in air with a cool flame, though I'd have thought 2 PSF3 +3 O2 ---> 2 POF3 + 2 SO2 would have released a fair bit of energy. My newer books don't mention this. Try Googling it!

Breathing mixture of PSF3, POF3 and SO2 doesn't sound cool to me. Even if they are freezing cold.
