Predicting/balanceing Net ionic equations
« on: October 04, 2005, 10:26:15 PM »
OK, here we go.

I have attempted to predict/balance the net ionic equations of the following reactions, please tell me if I am correct and, if not, please give me a little nudge (or shove) in the proper dirrection, Thank you!

Combining HCl and NaOH (pretty easy)

HCl + NaOH --> NaCl + H2O
H+(aq) + Cl -(aq) + Na+(aq) + OH-(aq) -->  Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + H2O(liq)
H+(aq) + OH-(aq) --> H2O(liq)

Combining Ammonium Chloride and Sodium Hydroxide

NH4Cl + NaOH --> NH3 + NaCl + H2O
NH3(aq) + H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + Na+(aq) + OH-(aq) --> NH3(aq) + Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + H20 (liq)
H+(aq) + OH-(aq) --> H2O(liq) ?

Combining a solution of ammonia (NH3OH) and HCl (this is where I get confused).

NH3OH +HCl --> NH4Cl + OH-
NH3(aq) + OH-(aq) +H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) --> NH4Cl(?aq?) + OH-(aq)
NH3(aq) +H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) --> NH4Cl(?aq?)

Balance the last equation again.  Instead of making it NH4CL keep it NH3CL and try adding another H to the OH-

So, instead of:
NH3(aq) +H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) --> NH4Cl(?aq?)

The Correct equation would be:

Ok, hmmm, would I also count out the Cl- as a spectator ion bacause NH3 has a charge of 0 and it wouldnt bond with NH3. And the NH3 would reamin a gas dissolved in the water so...

NH3(aq) + H+(aq) + --> NH3(aq) + Cl-(aq) + H2O(liq)

NH3(aq) + H+(aq) + --> NH3(aq) + Cl-(aq) + H2O(liq)

Well i believe that it's Cl- on both sides so they would cancel out.  And the NH3 is now on both sides and would cancel out.

So you would be left with

H+(aq) + OH-(aq) --> H2O(liq) as your answer again.  I think your instructor was trying to get you to notice a pattern.  That is the net ionic equation for all 3 of your problems I believe.

oh, duh, I forgot to cancel the NH3  ::)! Thanks for all the help CJP4!

Instead of making it NH4CL keep it NH3CL

Could you elaborate? As far as I am aware there is no such compound as HN3Cl. And even if it can be synthetised Lt.Pliskin is not asked about such stuff.
