Equations
« on: October 03, 2006, 05:42:54 PM »
These are equations we got during class but we didn't have to do them. But I wanted to anyways.

CuSO45H2O + Fe --> FeSO4 + Cu + 5H2O

CuSO45H2O + Na2CO3 --> CO2 + Na2SO4 + CuO + 2O2 + 5H2O

2HCl + Mg --> MgCl2 + H2
Pierre.

These are equations we got during class but we didn't have to do them. But I wanted to anyways.

CuSO45H2O + Na2CO3 --> CO2 + Na2SO4 + CuO + 2O2 + 5H2O

Above equation is incorrect
More reliable and simple, though not quite correct, is
CuSO4.5H2O +Na2CO3 --> CuCO3 + Na2SO4 + 5 H2O

Absolutely correct is
2CuSO4.5H2O +3Na2CO3 --> CuCO3.Cu(OH)2 + 2Na2SO4 + 2NaHCO3 + 9H2O
or
3CuSO4.5H2O +4Na2CO3 --> 2CuCO3.Cu(OH)2 + 3Na2SO4 + 2NaHCO3 + 14H2O

Formally you can write also this reaction:
2CuSO4.5H2O +2Na2CO3 --> CuCO3.Cu(OH)2 + 2Na2SO4 + CO2 + 10H2O
But I never seen the evolution of carbon dioxide in this reaction

Thanks a lot. But how can the first equation you posted be "reliable" but not correct?
Pierre.

Copper carbonate is really formed, but in reality it should be accompanied by copper hydroxide

I see, thanks a lot. The others I assume are then correct?

Eventually add (g) after H2 and O2

Then I guess I go around with (s) after the solids, (l) after the liquids, and so on.
Pierre.
