a reactions question ..
« on: November 14, 2006, 03:50:41 PM »
My professor's made a nice little trick and asked us to write down the reaction's equasion -
He just took out a piece of rolled paper with some sort of powder in it, threw it on the floor and it blew up.. made a nice bang too :)

I have no idea what this thing is.. would love a hint from one of you guys / girls ..

Thanks

Actually, how much of this substance did he use? And, were you given any advice about what it could be?
The only thing that I can think about is Nitrogen triiodide, but as far as I know this stuff is EXTREMELY dangerous, so I don't think that he used it.

Well - If there was a distinctly coloured flame (green, deep-red, or light blue) maybe your professor added a metal salt to colour the flame to make it look better.

I- less than a tea spoon
II- a bit of white smoke, the substance itself was brown-ish before, black after..  (the 'explosion')

I also thought about that, but I don't think that you can ignite it just by dropping it on the floor, and Magnesium has a grey-black colour.
Maybe your Prof put something in it to make it "explode" just by dropping it on the floor...

I really don't think so - Na has a very bright characteristic yellow flame, and I don't think that it can explode just because of the air humidity.
Maybe somebody else can answer you - I have to do some Homework now  :(
