Title: Ammonia + Bleach

Hi Im having trouble distinguishing the correct equation when reacting ammonia and sodium hypochlorite found in bleach.

I found that NaOCl + NH3 --> NaONH3 + 1/2Cl2 is infact false.

Other equations I came across included:
2 NaOCl + NH3 -> NaCl + NaOH + NH2Cl
NaOCl + 2 NH3 -> NaCl + H2O + N2H4
NH3 + NaOCl --> NH2Cl + NaOH
NaClO + NH3 → N2 + NaCl + H2O

I understand that adding more ammonia that bleach will produce hydrazine but I am mainly looking for the correct equation that produces chloramine.

why not try to look at Wikipedia - chloramine

Well actually thankyou very much. Sorry I tend to ignore wikipedia due to my school and most others banning as a respectable source of information. However it is quite detailed and the page has a lot of sources itself. Maybe Ill find the original source to cite from.

Wiki is on the mean quite good. It contains some blunders, but so do books, encyclopaedia, courses and peer-reviewed research papers. I suppose school professors denigrate this competitor by jealousy.

More generally, a scientist shouldn't believe a source but a thesis, based on his own rationale. Maybe high school is too early to realize that, since believing professors and books is a fast way to learn.
