Title: ethanol and bitrex
Post by: deauzie on December 02, 2004, 08:05:04 AM
I've been told that bitrex (  Denatonium Benzoate ) has a boiling point of 100 degrees celcius and Ethanol has a boiling point of 79.5 degrees celcius
so if I wished to seperate the 2 chemicals would it be as simple as placing the mixture in a pot still and bring it to the 79.5-80 degree celcius  would the Ethanol come across before the  Denatonium Benzoate  ?

Bitrex is a solid with melting point 163-170 C. It is soluble in ethanol (33.5 g in 100 ml of ethanol)
Of course, simple warming over 80 C removes ethanol completely.
But do not use this ethanol for drinking!

Most denaturalised ethanol (if this is what you have with the bitrex also added) also contains methanol as well, the separation of the methanol and ethanol needs carefull fractionation.
