I need to prep some 40% HCl but cannot rem'ber which I add first to the graduated cylinder?
-
Add acid to the water.
-
;)
-
Good luck preparing 40% HCl by diluting concentrated hydrochloric acid... ::)
-
"Do what you oughta, add acid to water"
Stupid I know but it rhymes and people remember it.

Haha, good point :)

*Not sure why I would need "Good Luck" in doing this simplistic procedure of a 2:5 dilution--I think my 5 yr ole son could do this, no? ???
*Oh, and StewieGriff--is your avatar pouring acid into water on the pic beside your post? :D

Semantics :). Everyone knows what you mean when you say you're making a 40% solution.
Concentrated HCl is 12M to start with, or ~"36%" (http://www.erowid.org/archive/rhodium/chemistry/equipment/molarity.html or https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/chemistry/stockroom-reagents/learning-center/technical-library/reagent-concentrations.html)
And yes my avatar is definitely follow the safety rules ;)
-
Where is 4.8M ever called 40% HCl? :o ???
-
for safety considrations always add acid to water
-
to about 50% water, add the acid then add the rest of the water to the mark.
