Title: Neutralisation of Hypophosphorus acid with sodium hydroxide
Post by: btzwong on July 08, 2010, 09:31:14 AM
H3PO2 + NaOH  :rarrow: NaH2PO2 + H20

Just wondering is the salt formed during the neutralisation of hypophosphorus acid with sodium hydroxide is sodium hypophosphate? Is there other products?

I think those are the only products.

See http://www.webqc.org/balancedchemicalequations-081207-80.html to confirm

It depends on how much NaOH is added.  If there is an excess of NaOH over H3PO2, then you'll see species like Na2HPO2 and Na3PO2.
