Title: I need help finding the pH of something and concentration
Post by: Aeden on July 12, 2010, 05:23:58 PM
Methyl orange from yed to yellow. Turning point 3.0 to 4.4

Bromothymol blue from yellow to blue. Turning point 6.0 to 7.6

Bromocresol green from yellow to blue. Turning point 3.8 to 5.4

Phenol Red from yellow to red. Turning point is 6.4 to 8.2

The pH of the solution lies between _____________________

Hi guys. Can you please help me how to figure these out? I wrote 7.6 to 8.2 is what it lies between because they are both above basic level which would make sense to reduce the level of acidity. All the turning points go up.

Still not sure if that's right, anyone help, please?

I have one more question.

An employee prepares 1.75 L of hydrochloric acid solution (HCl) from 500 ml of a solution with a concentration of 11.25 M. What is the concentration of the solution obtained? Write the calculations in full.

Thank you for the link to my second problem. I will read it after this post and edit in an answer that is hopefully correct. As for the first question, there was no solution mentioned. I am supposed to figure out what the pH of an unknown solution is based off the numbers I posted.

"Determine the approximate pH of an unknown solution that gives the following colours with these indicators"

Methyl orange from yed to yellow. Turning point 3.0 to 4.4

Bromothymol blue from yellow to blue. Turning point 6.0 to 7.6

Bromocresol green from yellow to blue. Turning point 3.8 to 5.4

Phenol Red from yellow to red. Turning point is 6.4 to 8.2

The pH of the unknown solution lies between _____________________

As I said, I wrote 7.6 - 8.2 because they are above neutral and all the numbers rise which I assume means that a basic solution was added. I really don't put much confidence in that answer though.

Methyl orange is yellow over ph 4.4
Bromocresol green is blue over pH 5.4
Bromothymol blue is blue over pH 7.6
Phenol red is red over pH 8.2 up to 14

Thank you. As for my second question, I've figured out the answer. It's 3.214 M

*Ignore me, I am impatient*! I have another question, I'd rather not make a new thread and clutter the forum up.

What volume of a .50 M solution can be prepared from 750 ML of a 1.75 M solution?

Using c1v1=c2v2 I did

C1=1.75 M
V1=.75 L

C2= .50M
v2 = ?

1.75 M x .75 / .50 = 2.625 L.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
500 ml of 2.25 mol/L solution is diluted with enough water to make a total of 2.25 L . What is the concentration of the diluted solution?

Same thing. I did

c1=2.25 M
v1= .5 ml
c2= ?
v2= 2.25 L

2.25 x .5 = 2.25 = 0.5 M.

Can I get a correction on this please?

Two and three significant digits are expected, respectively.
