I have a question concerning the readctivity of OH- group in alkanes. As many here shoulda know, the OH gropu is a rather bad leaving group. However, anyone knows how it behaves with 1,2 diols? Are there any reactions like for example epoxide formation under standard substitution type conditions?

Instead 1,2-diols are synthesized from epoxides.

Look up pinacol rearrangements.

In pinacol rearrangement water is a leaving group.
