Title: PLEASE HELP SOLVE!!!!!!!! Thomson & Millikan Experiments
Post by: BummeeJab on September 13, 2018, 01:20:44 AM
A professor discovered a new particle-- for the cathode ray experiment the particle requires an increase in electric field of 66.7% to achieve the same deflection as an electron. The millikan oil drop experiment requires a decrease of 66.7% in electric field to suspend the same oil drops. Using the electron's known charge and mass, find the charge and mass of the new particle.
The equation F=qE may be helpful in this solution.

So, what does the equation tell you?

I have tried using the equation MANY MANY different ways and i inevitably have too many variables to solve. If ANYONE can figure this out PLEASE *delete me*!!!

List out all the things you know.

The problem stated above IS THE PROBLEM I need solved. That is all the info given along with the fact that the given equation should help you solve it. This is an UPPER LEVEL Chemistry Question given by someone with a doctorate in the field. It is VERY DIFFICULT to answer, if after reading what i wrote above you cant solve or attempt to help, dont bother asking any other questions because i have no other info other than what is stated above, like I said. Thank You.

@BummeeJab
You have to show your attempts or thoughts at solving the question to receive help.

So the only way people can help on the forum is to give hints and you solve the problem.  I expect that this might not work for you and you will have to go elsewhere. Sorry

That is all the info given

Nope. You were taught before many things about how the charges behave in the electric fields, you were also probably taught how the Millikan experiment works and what it does mean to deflect the particle and why they are deflected. These are all things to consider.

So, again: list all equations related to these problems that you know.

Not just the equations, list things you know, such as the charge on the electron, the mass, what forces are acting on it, etc.

Many of us here have PhDs.
