Title: I am trying to make a better weedkiller for my driveway
Post by: durangod on August 05, 2019, 11:08:54 PM
Hi, i have tried several ways to kill weeds in my driveway and so far here is what i have, i am not a chemist in any way but i thought this might be the place to ask.

In my sprayer i put 1/2 gal of vinegar, 1/2 cup of table salt, 1 tablespoon of dawn dish soap.   This mixure really pisses them off and it eventually will kill them but you have to keeping doing it over and over again every couple of days because it washes off which gets expensive.

The way that mix is suppose to work is that the vinegar is an acid, the salt prevents the weed from obsorbing water, and the dish soap helps it stick to the leaves so it covers it up.

So i thought maybe i could add something to the mix to kill them faster so it would not take as much product.  I thought i would ask here to see what might work and what might be safe to add.

If i added a cup of gasoline to that mix, is it safe for me, and will it work when its deluted.  I dont want anything to catch fire or blow up but i want enough to kill them and i know gas kills just about anything.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :)

Gasoline has nothing to do on the soil. It's a bad pollutant. So are its carcinogen vapours.

More generally, the compounds you cite will not stay on your driveway. Their killing action spreads around. Sure, you could spill quantities of cheap de-icing salt, but soon the entire garden, or the groundwater, will be poisoned.

You could try pine bark. In gardens it works. Bark serves to protect trees against foreign species like fungi, grass and about everything. Buy big bags at a gardening shop, spread on your driveway, they work for 3 years, then make a barbecue of them and renew.
