Title: CdS/CdOx quantum dot (QD) photocatalyst
Post by: H@wkeye! on August 12, 2019, 04:16:06 AM
Hi all

I am keen to begin recycling plastic, and ideally if all goes well, begin using it to make clean power. I recently came across a few articles which said this can be done with just sunlight. See here: https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/09/06/some-cool-chemistry-using-light-turn-waste-plastic-hydrogen-fuel-13387 and here: https://www.cnet.com/news/plastic-waste-could-be-used-to-fuel-hydrogen-cars/

I'm just a fairly average joe and so don't have a much of science background. But despite that i'm keen to try experimenting with this. What need to get the ball rolling is to find out what is CdS/CdOx quantum dot (QD) photocatalyst and how can i synthesis is? If anyone knows i'd love to hear from them. I understand i may be in over my head.

Cheers
Hawk

In all attempts to recycle polymers into fuels, I strongly suggest to check what the residues are, and how toxic they are.

You might also check how much of the wrong polymers you can tolerate in the process. Usually, PE and PP can be transformed, PET too if separately, but as soon as a little bit of PVC is mixed in, the gases and the leftovers are really nasty. It's a fundamental problem hampering pyrolysis processes. Does photocatalysis achieve it any better?

Usually, plastic waste isn't a serious issue, while the leftovers of recycling are horrible. It's far better to have a bunch of PE, PP, PET in the ground than polycyclic aromatics or a random cocktail of organic chlorides.

PVC garbage is more an issue, but usually recyclers don't care about eliminating it.
