Title: SALC in legand field theory
Post by: Kyriee on October 22, 2019, 07:40:48 AM
Referring to the ligands field theory, why do we need to combine orbitals into SALC? I mean, the orbitals which result from the combination are not "real", but just something we created. The starting ligands' orbitals already have a great overlap with the metal's orbitals. Then why do we need to use the SALC? Is it just a matter of calculations/symmetry?

Are any orbitals in any way "real"?
