Title: Separating funnel question
Post by: Kunshirostorm on November 25, 2019, 11:45:35 AM
hello everyone i have a big problem in a vilsmeier haack formylation (POCl3 in DMF + 4-Bromoindole in DMF)
the result is normally:

DMF (exess)
H2O (exess)

PO2Cl2- (10mmol)
C3H7NOH+ (5) and C3H7NCl+ (5)

Cl- (5)
C2H8N+ (5)

4-bromindole-3-carboxaldehyde (the organic i whant to extract, 5mmol)

and i don't know how to do a Separation + washing in a funnel
i have a hint and it is partitioning between EtOAc and NaHCO2, and wash the organic layer with brine and dry over MgSO4
question:

when to put EtOAc and why, what is his function.
when to put NaHCO3 and why.
when partitioning done what is in the aqueous and organic phases that are made.

so please if someone can tell me the experimental protocole of this separation, like steps and tools that are used.
It would be awesome if i could understand this funnel separation thing.

Find an Organic Lab Manual and read up on it - then see what you don't understand.

look up working up reactions in DMF as this is probably the most important thing to consider
