Title: purchase ozone generator
Post by: Babcock_Hall on April 07, 2020, 04:26:32 PM
Hello Everyone,

I am thinking of buying an ozone generator to use with alkenes to make aldehydes, but I have never actually performed this kind of chemistry myself.  Does anyone have any experience with these machines in general or with one manufacturer in particular?  I did find something at UCLA that was helpful:  https://www.chemistry.ucla.edu/sites/default/files/safety/sop/SOP_Ozone_Generator.pdf

You can find small ones 50-2000mg/h that is ment for marine aquarium. Its really uncomplicated. Here is one

I was able to obtain a A2Z ozone generator from a professor who was retiring.  We have some time before we need to do a reaction, but this will be my first time performing an ozonolysis.  Does anyone have effective use or safety tips that he or she would like to share?  Thanks.

I have done a lot of ozonolysis reaction, its good to check the progress on TLC, the ozonide generally gives very slow staining with KMnO4, the alkene gives very fast staining. Some groups can react with ozone so it can be important to stop the reaction as soon as the alkene is consumed. Just keep the device in a fumehood. Also if any significant amount of ozone gets out the smell is very strong long before it is toxic.

Thank you.  We have detected our reactant on TLC plates with KMnO4 and ninhydrin and will perform our first reaction soon.
