Title: A little help determining the name of this compound
Post by: nkth_18215 on May 04, 2020, 12:56:58 PM
Hi guys, this is my first post here.

I'm performing a virtual synthesis of a compound for a lab exercise (since we obviously cannot do it physically), and it was determined that my final product was the one shown in my picture attachment. What I've figured out so far is that the left half of the compound is 3-phenylprop-2-enoic acid, assuming that it's a carboxylic acid and not an ester (please correct me if that's wrong too). I've also figured out that the right half is 2,4-dimethoxyphenyl. Could someone please point me in the right direction in naming the final product? Nomenclature isn't my strong suit and I've tried my best so far. Much appreciated.

The right one is not phenyl its benzyl. Combine both to the ester.

Yes
3-phenyl-2-propenoic acid or 3-phenylprop-2-enoic acid  (common name is cinnamic acid)

2',4'-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol

Now make the ester name...
