Title: Solubility of dimethyl tartrate in water
Post by: lukas.stib on May 24, 2020, 11:22:15 AM
Hello chemists,

please, is dimethyl tartrate solubility in water? I didn't find any information about him anywhere. When I synthesized it from tartaric acid and methanol, I wanted to separate it from the mixture by pouring water, which created 2 layers, but no layers formed... So, I think dimethyl tartrate is solubility in water very big.

Thank you very much.

If you followed a known procedure, there was certainly also a method of isolation there.
I advise you to evaporate the solution to a not very large volume (about 2-3 times greater than the expected yield - in this way you will remove the rest of unreacted methanol), The residue can be subjected to salting-out or vacuum distillation.

You haven't provided relevant information.
There are 3 compounds called tartaric acid: D- or L-, DL (racemate) and meso-. The compounds themselves and their derivatives have different properties.
In addition, unreacted methanol will increase the solubility of their esters. If you followed a reliable procedure, it means you made some mistakes, but it's hard to guess what they were.
An average trained chemist should expect 5-20% solubility of these esters in water, so it is important to remove unreacted methanol (b.p. 65) after neutralizing the acid to decrease the solubility of the ester, and then pour the solution into very cold water (better 20% cold NaCl solution). In this way, it is even possible to obtain a solid ester.
