Title: Separating pairs of organic compounds
Post by: Darkstar on September 12, 2004, 04:35:48 PM
Which one of the pairs can be separated more easily (no chromatography) and why?

a) orto-hydroxyacteofenon – meta-hydroxyacetofenon
OR
meta-hydroxyacetofenon - para-hydroxacetofenon

b) para-metoxytoluene –  benzylmethylic ether,
OR
para-kresol -  benzilic alcohol

What you are looking for is which molecules have the most distincly different reactivity.  Start with what the major differences are between the pairs of molecules and then compare to the other pair.
