Title: cyclotron safety
Post by: Nastyachudes on September 29, 2020, 03:51:29 PM
Hello!
Could you answer the question, that I can't reply...
I have job offer to work in positron emission tomography company as a chemist- technologist. This work conected with producing Ftor 18 ( period of half life 108 min).
So, I don't know is it dangerous to work there. Who is working in this equipment and produce this element?
Thanks a lot for your answer!
Best regards, Anastasia

I think it is not more dangerous as to work in a nuclear power plant.
Of course you have to work according the safety rules.

Thanks a lot, but, how do you think what work-related injuries can be obtained if all safety rules are followed?

Theoretical nothing. But if you already aware of the job, maybe looking for something different.

Radioactive substances can cause burning of skin until to cancer. Fluoride itself is a poisson Element.
So wear gloves, and probably do the experiments behind a wall of lead.

Thanks so much for your answer! So, they  will give me dosimeteres. These dosimeteres give information about radioactivity. But speaking about statistics, Chemists didn't get big radioactivity. It is almost the same as radioactivity for civilians.... But, if you say, that I need to wear gloves... They said that is robot. And only one time , when I contact - cassette. Because the trace of substances with activity will be there.what else... And they will buy second cassette next year.
Sorry for my English!
I am russian)

I guess some dangerous work will be done by robot. But robot can fail and so have to repair or get the samples in the hot radioactive area.

I agree with you!
