Title: alkylation of p-cresol with tert-butyl alcohol
Post by: zhyzyzp on January 16, 2021, 10:55:34 AM
There's a course assignment of preparing BHT in the laboratory. I plan to prepare it by alkylation of p-cresol with tert-butyl alcohol catalyzed by H3PO4. But what're the possible side reactions and by-products?And what's the method of
purification?

And what do you think - the reaction has two stages?

With a properly conducted reaction and the use of good quality cresol, there is nothing to purify. The method of cleaning always depends on the composition of the product.
