When will pinacol rearrangement result in aromatic expansion? I noticed on some problems the ring expands, but on others it doesn't. Is the rule that only one alcohol can be attached to the ring in order for it to expand? That's to say, if the entire diol is attached to a segment of the ring, the ring will not expand?
