Title: Any signs of nitromethane degradation?
Post by: tkffuwnj on October 27, 2022, 04:25:08 PM
Hello. I am trying to set up a reaction using nitromethane. The one I have in my lab is pretty old and show a slight yellow color. Also the pH is lower than 5 (based on pH strip). Can these two signs tell if my nitromethane is good or bad?

Hiii

The color isn't always a good indicator; a little impurity/degradation might give a strong color although the whole sample itself is quiet pure.

Depending on your reaction, it still might be okay. Otherwise, i would suggest some form of purification?

Also, A H-NMR might give you some insight if the product is pure!

Good luck!
