Title: properties of ethanol in precipitaion.
Post by: jonathan31 on September 26, 2004, 12:42:16 PM
When using CuSO4 and NH3 and water, the product Cu(NH3)4(S04)dotH2O can be formed.
(This is tetraammine copper(II) sulfate monohydrate.)
In a lab report it says to mix these two reactants..then add ethanol to the already dark blue soltion of CuSO4 and NH3 to precipitate tetraammine copper(II) sulfate monohydrate instead of CU(OH)2.
Why is ethanol used?
what properties of ethanol help to precipitate this inorganic compound?
Please help me with this, it is urgent, thank you.

Ethanol is much less polar thab water and change (diminish) solubility of salts in water.
