Title: tons vs tonnes
Post by: Donaldson Tan on October 07, 2004, 06:20:35 PM
i'm confused which is which.

as far as i know,
1 ton (metric) = 1000kg
1 ton (us) = 907kg
1 ton (uk) = 1016kg

which of the above is tons, and the other tonnes?

Maybe it's just American vs British spelling?

I think Mitch is right.  So 1 ton = 907 kg, 1 tonne = 1016 kg, and a metric ton = 1000 kg.  I think a metric ton is also sometimes referred to as a "long ton" in the US.

Webster says:
1000 kg = 1 tonne or 1 metric ton
907 kg = 1 (short) ton
1016 kg = 1 (long) ton
plurals - always tonnes

Tons is UK, whereas Tonnes is US. Their relationship is as follows:
100tons  = 112 tonnes

geodome -
I am from the USA and I have never heard of this tonne being US versus UK. I hardly ever use the term tonne(s), whereas I have used ton on several occasions. Also, the dictionary does not have your description of tonne. Finally, your description does not really agree with my previous post. Will you please cite your source? I believe you have this mixed up with the relationship between long ton and short ton. My understanding is that tonne is a metric measurement not Avoirdupois (U.S.).
Regards,
Bill
