Title: Electrolyzed Solid
Post by: /// on November 21, 2006, 08:00:45 PM
What would the ionic equation be for when Liquid Sodium Chloride is Electrolyzed.

I was told that water is added, but I want to confirm it.

NaCl + H2O > NaOH + HCl
??

I have already told you when you posted this question in your first thread that this is not the case (you should not double post your questions).

Sorry, I missed it, lol.

So since now I got NaCl > NaOH + Cl  (it was in the example :P:))

But then theres no H's or O's in the reactants side.

I asked my teacher though and he said it means H2O is added.

Electrolysis does not mean adding water. The question specifically stated that this is liquid NaCl,  ie the melted solid, not a solution.

I will use this oppertunity to illustrate how useful forum searches can be.
Do a forum search for "electrolysing molten sodium chloride".
