Post by: VanNistelrooy on January 04, 2005, 06:58:12 AM
i have been researching this compound and sources are conflicting one another, some say it breaks down to a chlorite or chlorate, others chlorine and oxygen, also some say it can be a liquid, others only a gas, some say explosive, some merely say it breaks down. Can anyone give me a DIFFINITIVE list of properties

ClO2
1)Yellow Gas,condenses into red liquid.
2)Liquid explodes above -40'C.
3)Detonates readily whenconc above 50mm Hg.
4)Obtained from NaClO3
  2NaClO3 + SO2 +H2SO4-------->2ClO2 + 2NaHSO4
5)Dissolves in water evolving heat & giving dark green solution.
6)This decomposes very slowly in the dark,Rapidly when illuminated
ClO2--->ClO + O
2ClO +H2O -->HCl + HClO3
7)Paramagnetic
Is It okay.. :)
