Title: Need Help from an industrial organo-chemist
Post by: Guy f on July 12, 2007, 05:45:31 AM
Hi,
I inspect industrial wastewater quality, and I've found a material I don't recognize. Can anyone tell me what is it, and what could be the source of it? I would be grateful.
This material contains (according to a GC-MS analysis):

1-nonadecene (cas# 18435-45-5)
docosane (cas# 629-97-0)
nonahexacontanoic acid (cas# 40710-32-5)
1-eicosene (cas# 3452-07-1)
nonacosane (cas# 630-03-5)
tetracosane (cas# 646-31-1)
1-hexacosene (cas# 18835-33-1)
tridecane (cas# 629-50-5)
1,5,4-dibromo-tetrapentacontane (cas# 1000156-09-4)
2-octadecyloxy ethanol (cas# 2136-72-3)
2-hexyl-1-decanol (cas# 2425-77-6)
octadecane (cas# 593-45-3)
2,6,10,14-tetramethyl hexadecane (cas# 638-36-8)

Thanks
Guy

Most of them are hydrocarbons from fuel

Thanks for your reply,
I know they're found in fuels, but this one was an odorless oil.

Odour depends on concentration and of content. This is a reason why deodorants work.

Can you suggest possible sources for this transparent, odorless "oil" wich contains these fuel constituents?

Odorants are not naturally present in fuel. They are added so that one can detect/smell fuel leakage.

So you suggest this is some kind of crude fuel?

What kind of businesses contribute to the waste water?

heavy industry, including everything from crude oil processing to cookey bakeries.

A few of these substances have double bonds, or alcohols... this does not seem to me to be fuel... Maybe someone has some other ideas?
