Title: Preparation of Chlorine Gas
Post by: qwed on September 12, 2007, 08:24:34 AM
i saw an experimental set up from a book:
A dropping funnel containing hydrochloric acid is connected to a beaker containing bleaching solution. The chlorine gas and water produced then go to other two beakers containing water and concentrated sulphuric acid respectively. the final output is chlorine gas.

what is the function of the water (in the beaker) in this process?

thx a lot

It will be easier to answer if you could draw a diagram.

Is it something like that?
Id say the container of water is trapping the water so only molecules that are gaseous at room temperature continue through the system.
