Title: silicate glass in ethanol
Post by: ginus01 on October 27, 2007, 03:34:12 PM
Hi everybody,

Do someone know if a silicate glass can dissolve even a little in ethanol or in other alcohols ? Because ethanol is a polar solvant, it may have an effect like hydrolysis. What do you think ?
Many thanks

Stéphane from France.

Hi Stéphane

I believe, altought I can be wrong, that silicates glasses dissolve in polar solvents, like ethanol. But they do not dissolve considerably, so I believe that you can't see the dissolution.
I fundament my opinion on the fact that water stays at windows, and that those treated windows it doesn't stay. That's because on normal silicate glasses, there is a group -OH binded to the molecules.

So, my conclusion is that yes. It does solubilize. But you can't see it.
Hope helped you.
