Title: Covalent bonding question
Post by: 21385 on December 27, 2007, 12:37:34 AM
How many atoms are covalently bonded to the chromium atom in Cr(NH(3))(4)Cl(3)?

The answer is 6 but I do not know why, can someone explain this for me? Thanks a lot

perhaps 1 Cl is not coordinated to Cr

[Cr(NH3)4Cl2]Cl

But how do you know it is 6, not 8, 7, or any other possible coordinate numbers? Is it just knowledge?

Thanks

Yes, this is a knowledge from coordination chemistry.
