Title: Where to Buy Chemicals?
Post by: Paul1245 on January 12, 2008, 11:39:04 PM
I posted on this board a few weeks ago about the removal of caffeine from a solution. Well, since I have found out how I can do this, but its going to require a couple chemicals that I dont know where I can get. What sort of stores sell chemicals?

The method is going to require:

- Chloroform or Methylene Chloride. Apparently Ether will also work but is dangerous.
and
- dry Sodium Carbonate (bicarb might work)

Anyone know where to buy these chemicals?

Methylene chloride and chloroform are both considered to be PHMs.

You will never be able to buy these from a licensed provider/seller unless you are licensed.

Ether is not a PHM....it is considered a serious fire and explosive risk....  BOTTOM LINE:  You will not be able to purchase any of these reagent grade materials LEGALLY without a license....

Breathing chloroform causes dizziness, fatigue, headaches, etc...considered to be TOXIC and an environmental HAZARD....

This would be some very dangerous kitchen chemistry...if you are willing to use MeCl and or CH3Cl outside of a hood without respiratory equipment...you are willing to die.

According to wikipedia, sodium carbonate is used to control the pH of pool water, so if I was looking for some, I'd look in a pool supply store.  But mebecker is absolutely right about your solvents.  You'll have a hard time obtaining them unless you work in a lab and unless you work in a lab(or have a laboratory fume hood in your garage) you do NOT want to be working with them as they are pretty dangerous.  I don't know about the specific procedure that you're working with, but perhaps it would be possible to use an alcohol or oil instead?

After reading mebekers post, im not even going to bother with any of those chemicals. They seem far too dangerous for use outside of a lab.

What I am looking for is a chemical to disolve either Codeine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codeine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codeine) or Caffeine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine) , but not both.

The method for this that I found used chlorophorm to dissolve the codeine, which now seems like a horrible idea. The Sodium Bicarbonate was for dissociating the codeine phosphate to pure codeine. Its essentially extracting codeine from asprin, caffeine, and codeine tablets. Im not sure if this is against the TOS of this forum, so I didnt post it earlier. Any help would be nice. Thanks.

It kinda depends on your country of origin, but in general, we generally never try to give posters on these forums useful information on self-medication.  Whether it's narcotics, cancer medication, or diy prescription antidepressants.

I told you at the very beginning:  You said you did it in class.  You said you didn't get to eat the product, by implication because that would be unsafe.  So that was a hint -- it's just as unsafe coming from your basement lab.

Methylene chloride and chloroform are both considered to be PHMs.

What does 'PHM' mean?  I'm guessing Poly Halogenated (Material???) but I am not familiar with that term.

PHM is a designation for a "Potentially Hazardous Material."

You should read the MSDS sheets (Material Safety Data Sheets) on those materials.  You should also go to OSHA and EPA and read their documentation.

PHM is a designation commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry; but, not limited to that industry.  It is a designation used in Health and Safety Plans set into place by various companies, universities, government (NASA), poison Help Hotlines,...etc...
