The urge to breath results from high CO2 concentrations in the blood. There are no physiological sensors of blood pO2. Divers often hyperventilate (breath rapidly and deeply for several minutes) just before a dive thinking this will increase the blood's O2 content. Based on hemoglogin function,
a. will this practice produce the desired effect?
b. what other effects (if any) is it likely to produce?
c. evaluate the overall effectiveness of this practice.
