Title: what kind of trap can I use to avoid ethyl acrylate smell ?
Post by: karl26 on February 26, 2008, 08:20:54 AM
Hi everybody,

I am doing a reaction involving a distillation of excess ethyl acrylate ( big scale reaction > 100 kg)

We are having problems with the smell of ethyl acrylate vapours (small quantities which comes out of the pump) even if we use a 10% NaOH scrubber

Does anyone know a more efficient way to trap ethyl acrylate vapours ?

thanks in advance

 ;)

Dear Karl26;

For “Vacuum Pumps” you should always use a “Cryogenic Trap” (even for large scaled).
In your case maybe you have to use “Liquid Nitrogen”.
But I believe: first you will have to clean your pump to be successful.

About “Cryotraps” you can read on:    "CryoPump (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryopump)”

Good Luck!

Our group uses a rotovap specific for these occasions.  We keep it in the hood.  We also use a Welch model 2027 to remove DMF, DMSO, etc...

We wash all of our glassware that was in contact with acrylates with a domestic hypochlorite solution (bleach). This probably oxidises the acrylate into something that can then be washed normally
