Title: Quantification using Anthrone Method lab background info
Post by: YULivin4 on March 03, 2008, 05:58:11 PM
I am working on a lab for the isolation of glycogen from rat liver and then determination of glucose using the Anthrone Method.  I am looking for background information about the Anthrone procedure.  If found an article from back in 1957 about the "Rxn of pentoses with anthrone" and it talked about Dreywood's original paper but didn't find any info about him.  So was it Dreywood in '47 or who purposed it, when, ect...?  I'm trying to write my intro and can't find anything other than journal articles about people using it.  If someone knows a location of some info (web, book, whatever), I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

According to a paper by L.P. Zill (1956), Dreywood in 1946 demonstrated that "anthrone is almost a group-specific qualitative reagent for carbohydrates".  A better reference for you might be: Morris, D.L. 1948. Science 107:254-255 where apparently it was shown that anthrone could be used for the quantitative determination of hexoses.  According to Zill, anthrone was originally developed for the determination of glycerol in 1938.  Hope this helps.
